Frequently Asked Questions

  • Playa dust is fine, alkaline, and gets everywhere. Even with windows and doors closed, dust will find its was through vents and seals in the RV. While you can’t fully prevent dust from getting inside the RV you can help by:

    • Using a high quality, low tack, painters tape to seal as many windows and vents as possible.

    • Keep windows and doors closed whenever possible.

    • Consider a "no shoes" rule inside to protect your RV.

    • Cover furniture with sheets.

  • No. While we understand deep cleaning may be difficult, renters are expected to return the RV as clean as possible. Post-playa cleaning can be purchased as an add-on.

General Questions

Water & Sewage

  • It depends on tank size and consumption rate. Standard RV faucets and showers typically use 1.5–2.5 gallons per minute. Many renters use "military showers" and body wipes to conserve water. Bring drinking water in separate food grade containers.

  • There are no hookups or dump stations on the playa and dumping gray or black water onto the is harmful and violates the event’s "Leave No Trace" policy. You must either use professional RV pumping services on-site or pack all sewage out with you.

    • On-Site Delivery Services: You can hire vendors to empty your holding tanks, but you must coordinate this with "Outside Services".

    • Flagging Down Trucks: You can try to flag down trucks, but this is unreliable and requires waiting. Look for trucks marked with a special "RV" flag.

  • The short answer is, yes, but its not recommended as your primary plan.

    • On-Site Delivery Services: You can hire vendors to deliver fresh water directly to your RV, but you must coordinate this with "Outside Services".

    • Flagging Down Trucks: You can try to flag down water trucks, but this is unreliable and requires waiting.

  • Yes, you can technically run your generator for long periods of time at Burning Man. However, that doesn’t always mean you should.

    Here’s what to consider:

    🔥 High Desert Heat

The extreme daytime temperatures on the playa put a heavy load on generators. When it’s 95–105°F+, your generator is already working harder to keep your RV cool. Long, continuous run times can cause overheating — especially during the hottest part of the day.

    🌪 Playa Dust

Burning Man dust is incredibly fine and alkaline. Air filters clog much faster than they would in normal environments. Restricted airflow can cause your generator to overheat or shut down. Filters may need to be checked and cleaned more frequently than usual.

    ⛽ Fuel Consumption

Running a generator all day burns through fuel quickly. You’ll need to carefully calculate your usage and ensure you have enough fuel stored safely and legally. Running out of fuel mid-week (or mid-heatwave) is not ideal.

    ⚙️ Wear & Tear

Continuous operation increases mechanical strain. The more you run it, the higher the chance of maintenance issues — and there’s no AAA on the playa.

    🔇 Camp Courtesy

While generators are common, constant noise can impact your neighbors’ experience. Many camps encourage mindful usage, especially during early morning or late-night hours.

    Best Practice Recommendation

We strongly encourage strategic generator use rather than 24/7 operation:

    • Run it during peak heat hours for A/C.

    • Turn it off overnight when temperatures drop.

    • Use fans and ventilation when possible.

    • Monitor temperature and performance.

    • Check and clean air filters regularly.

    • Keep an eye on fuel levels.

Used thoughtfully, your generator will keep you comfortable all week without unnecessary strain on the equipment.

  • Short answer: yes — but it’s not ideal.

You can run your A/C at Burning Man, but doing so nonstop can cause issues.

🔌 If You’re on Shore Power

    • A/C units draw a lot of power.

    • Multiple RVs running A/C can trip breakers and overload camp grids.

    • Many camps limit when or how long A/C can run.

    🔥 If You’re on a Generator

    • A/C creates a heavy, constant load.

    • High afternoon temps increase the risk of generator overheating.

    • You’ll burn through fuel quickly.

    ❄️ Airflow & Freeze-Ups

    • Playa dust clogs filters fast.

    • Restricted airflow can cause coils to freeze.

    • Running the unit nonstop increases strain and reduces efficiency.

    ⚙️ Wear & Tear

Continuous use increases the chance of breakdowns, and repairs on playa aren’t easy.

    Best Practice

Run A/C during peak heat, turn it off when not in the RV and overnight, use reflective window coverings, and use shade + fans to reduce strain.

Yes, you can run it , but strategic use will keep your system (and your camp) happier all week.
